Programming Clerk

JOB SUMMARY
The Library Clerk provides consistent, high quality customer service in response to the needs of library users. This position focuses on providing account support, information, and reference assistance to library patrons in addition to supporting other services provided by the library. The Library Clerk assists with the daily operations of the library and performs related duties as assigned. Work is performed independently with the direction of their supervisor. The majority of work hours are spent working public service desks, providing customer service, account and technology support, and collection development. Work shifts may be part-time or full-time and may include evening and weekend work.

Job requires the employee to frequently sit, stand, twist/turn, walk and maintain flexibility, perform manual dexterity movements, stoop/bend, kneel, crawl, and balance. Must be able lift and carry 10-25 lbs; reach at, above, and below shoulder height; and push and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The job requires employees to work a varied schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends. Position schedule is subject to change at any time at the discretion of management. Scheduling flexibility is a must.

JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides excellent customer service in person and over the phone.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with library policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Maintains confidentiality and privacy of all patron information.
- Assists library visitors with account issues and the circulation of library materials: including, but not limited to, check-out, check-in and renewal of library materials issuing library cards, verifying and updating patron records, processing of fines, fees, and donations, inspecting items for damage, materials repairs, item holds processing, catalog assistance, shelving and pulling of materials within stacks and book drop, searching for lost items, and checking availability of materials.
- Provides informational assistance to patrons and refers questions as needed.
- Assists and advises patrons about library materials, resources, and technology equipment.
- Aids visitors with library services including reader’s advisory services, databases, public computers, printing, and online resources.
- Monitors activities within public areas to ensure patrons are provided an inviting and clean environment.
- Assists in collection development and management under the direction of a supervisor: including, but not limited to, materials review and selection, shelf reading and organization of materials, weeding of materials, and display creation and maintenance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required
- Strong customer service skills to assist patrons with all aspects of library services.
- Has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people from diverse backgrounds, including youth, families, volunteers, and coworkers both in person and over the phone.
- The ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship between library staff, administration, and the general public.
- Ability to regularly operate and exhibit proficiency with computers and commonly used computer applications, library systems and databases, email, and cloud environments. The job requires the employee to operate and occasionally troubleshoot various equipment, including new consumer technology.
- Ability to learn and adapt to new software and equipment technologies.
- Maintain a clean and orderly working environment.
- Ability to multitask and work through frequent interruptions.
- Knowledge of specialized library functions, as assigned, and fundamental library objectives, procedures, policies, and practices.
- Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D., or equivalent education, training, or experience.
- Must pass a background check.
- Prior library work experience preferred
